Show moreThe name Amaryllis actually came about due to a mistake by Swedish botanist Linnaeus. This was apparently because the buds of the flower resemble horse ears. In 1800, botanist Herbert discovered that the flower bulb did not belong to the Amaryllis species. That is why he came up with the new species name Hippeastrum, which is the name in Greek for “knight’s star”. However, the flower itself is still called Amaryllis.
