Flowering Period

Planting and flowering details
  • Planting
  • As soon as possible after receiving the Tulipa ‘American Dream’ bulbs they can be planted in the garden, a flower pot or in a planter. If not they must be kept in a frost-free area. Bulbs planted in a flower pot are not frost resistant. Plant the bulbs in a planting hole that is three times as deep as the height of the bulbs. For example a bulb of 5 cm should be planted in a 15 cm deep hole. The planting distance between the Tulipa ‘American Dream’ bulbs is about 10 cm. Loosen the soil well and plant the bulbs with the point facing upwards. Refill the planting hole and avoid walking over the soil. Plant the ‘American Dream’ bulbs one by one with a small trowel or with a special bulb planter. For larger groups make a wider hole to accommodate more bulbs. The more flower bulbs planted the greater effect the flowers will have. Plant the tulips in groups of at least 6 bulbs, or divide about 24 to 48 flower bulbs evenly over the garden border or flower bed.
    Tulipa ‘American Dream’ in pots
Tulipa ‘American Dream’ grows well in a flower pot or patio planter. Make sure you use fresh potting compost and place a layer of gravel or hydro granules at the bottom of the pot. For extra colour in the pot, plant low growing anemones or forget-me-nots just above the tulip bulbs.

  • Care
  • The flowers of the Tulipa ‘American Dream’ are at their best the first year after planting. That’s why we recommend each year adding new and extra bulbs to make your borders and pots even more colourful. The 'American Dream' tulip grows best in loose, well-drained soil anywhere in the garden. To protect the bulbs grown in a pot against frost, place the pot in a frost-free area or cover it with bubble wrap. Water the tulips during dry periods.
Tulip bulbs that have not yet been planted in the garden are sensitive to frost but once planted out in the garden, they are perfectly hardy.
Tulips planted in pots are more sensitive and will need to be protected in one of the following ways:
    • Store your potted tulips in a frost-free area that doesn't get too warm - they do need the cold.
    • Wrap the pot(s) in bubble wrap for extra protection.
    • If you line the inside of their pot(s) with bubble wrap before adding soil and planting your bulbs, your tulips will already have some protection.

  • Specifics
  • The bicoloured flowers of the tulip ‘American Dream’ are really wonderful. The petals are yellow in the centre and edged in red. The large heads are supported by firm stems. Selective crossing has made the stems of this tulip rather short which makes them extra gorgeous combined with other low growing spring plants in pots.
Tulipa ‘American Dream’ as a cut flower
The striking bicoloured flowers of Tulipa ‘American Dream’ are great as a cut flower. A group of these fresh looking tulips are a must have for your cut flower garden. The flowers last a long time in a vase. Pick the flowers early in the morning. Remove the lower leaves and put the stems immediately in a vase full of lukewarm water with cut flower food. Thanks to the firm stems these tulips are also suitable for using with oasis.
