  • Planting
  • Spray the leaves of your plant with rainwater immediately upon receipt. If you do not have any rainwater to hand place the pot under the tap and trickle some warm (room temperature) water over the plant, the water should not be cold.
Stand the whole arrangement in a warm, fairly light spot, but keep it away from direct sunlight. The lighter the spot, the longer the plant will stay red.

  • Care
  • Tillandsia is an easy to grow house plant requiring little or no maintenance. Spray the plant regularly, at least once a week, preferably with rainwater at room temperature. In the summer it will appreciate being stood outside on the patio during a summer shower.
Feeding the plant is not strictly necessary but if you want it to grow bigger, would certainly help. A liquid feed is recommended in this case - just spray over the plants 4-5 times a year. There is a special Tillandsia feed but you can also use standard house plant fertiliser, diluted 1:4 with rainwater. A temperature of between 16° and 24°C is perfect for Tillandsia.

  • Specifics
  • Exceptional and unusual, Tillandsia can be found growing on the branches of giant trees in tropical rainforests. The high degree of humidity there is sufficient to keep the plant thriving - water and minerals are absorbed through the leaves of this pretty little plant.
Tillandsia roots are more for support than sustenance and are used to hold the plant to the tree. This lovely tillandsia can tolerate the dry air of our living rooms. Tillandsia and other bromeliads are often used in a terrarium or palludarium.
Tillandsia is part of the Bromeliaceae (bromeliads) family, which is a very extensive tropical plant family that includes many varieties in all shapes, sizes and colours. Many of these grow directly on trees (epiphytic). Pineapples are one of the most well-known varieties of bromeliad!
All Bromeliads are beautiful and very striking houseplants for the home. This variety is not like most tube rosettes that collect water it grows little structures called trichomes on the leaves that collect all necessary moisture and nutrients from the surrounding air.
The plant makes new shoots after flowering and these shoots will then, under ideal circumstances, also flower.
