  • Planting
  • Ribes rubrum 'Jonkheer van Tets' is also available as a standard. Great for in the border between perennials, in a sunny or part shaded area! Easily grown in any type of soil. Recommended planting distance between plants should be about one metre. Make sure that the roots of ‘Jonkheer van Tets’ are moistened well prior to planting. Soak the roots in a bucket of lukewarm water overnight. Dig a large planting hole and thoroughly loosen the soil. Plant the bush at the right depth spreading the roots around the hole. Do not plant too deep – the roots should be about 10-15 cm below soil level. Fill the hole with soil and heel well in. Water generously after planting.
    Currant in a large planter
Are you aware that a currant bush will also thrive in a container on your patio or decking? Standard currant bushes remain a bit smaller so are perhaps even more suited to being planted in a container but regular currant bushes will also do well in a large planter. It’s up to you.
Ensure a well-drenched root ball prior to planting - soak it overnight in a bucket of lukewarm water. Use a nice sturdy container for your currant bush. Layer the base with potsherds or a few bricks and cover with potting compost – perhaps with added sand and/or garden soil – to about 2/3rd. Plant your bush at the right depth and spread the roots around the hole. The roots should eventually be around 10-15 cm under soil level so be sure not to plant too deep! Fill the rest of the container and press well in. Be sure to leave enough room (about 4 cm from the top edge) and water your bush immediately after planting. Stand the container in a nice sunny spot.

  • Care
  • The Standard Redcurrant ‘Jonkheer van Tets’ is a strong bush that requires little or no maintenance.

Cut back every other year (after harvesting) to encourage a bigger harvest in the years to follow. To do this, simply top all branches leaving 5 leaves per branch.

To totally rejuvenate the standard redcurrant, remove about half (or less) of the older branches. Leave at least 5 branches taking every precaution to avoid damaging the grafting point.

    Harvest the berries in July.
