Planting and flowering details
  • Planting
  • Rock Soapwort is a perennial that grows best in the ground. Prepare a suitable hole in well-drained, calcareous soil. Improve heavy garden soil by mixing in some sharp sand. Plant the Rock Soapwort at the appropriate depth in the hole. The top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. Rock Soapwort grows and flourishes in a sunny area.
Saponaria ocymoides is perfect for the rock garden
Saponaria ocymoides is a rich-flowering plant that richly covers the ground considering its small size. As this plant likes growing between rocks, it is an excellent choice for the rock garden. The plant spreads around well and rapidly covers a large area. This adorable plant also looks great in a flower pot or planter. Provide it with a mix of sandy soil and place it in total sunshine.

  • Care
  • Rock Soapwort is a strong plant that requires minimal maintenance. Although drought is well-tolerated, be sure to prevent the soil around its roots from drying out. Before winter, the stems above the ground will die back. During this period, cover the plants with a layer of fallen leaves. Early in the spring, provide it with some garden manure and cut off its unpleasant-looking stems. Soon there will be some new shoots growing above the ground. Rock Soapwort hates wet soil during the winter. If necessary, cover the plant with a protection.
