    How to Sow
Sow in the ground, preferably in full sun, from April until late September. Loosen the soil to at least 30 cm deep. Prepare a groove 1 cm deep. Place the seed tape along the groove, cut to length and gently cover with 0.5 cm of soil. Press the soil lightly down and sprinkle with water. Label your row with the name of the variety. Recommended spacing between rows: 20 cm. Alternate rows of carrot, with a row of onions and lettuce. The seeds will germinate between 6-14 days.

  • Care
  • No need to add fertilizer. Water more frequently during dry periods. Keep the plot weed-free as this helps the carrots, lettuce and spring onions to grow.
    Harvesting
The smell of carrots damaged at harvest, tends to attract the carrot fly. Prevent damage by harvesting the entire row and do not be tempted to pull a handful of carrots every few days. Use a rake to flip them up. Harvest spring onions one by one or use a small trowel to lift them. Spring onions are harvested early so try not to disturb the carrots. As for Lettuce, its rapid growth allows a regular and prolonged harvest and if you sow a tape every 2 or 3 weeks, you’ll enjoy them for longer. Cut the lettuce free with a knife.

  • Specifics
  • Carrots are orange which is the colour of the Netherlands ‘Royals’. In the 17th century, ships of the VOC brought back with them a purple carrot discovered in Iran. The Dutch market gardeners, very patriotic, multiplied trials, successfully, to give an orange colour in carrots. These are however, in various colours. The spring onions are young onion plants, if you were to leave them they would become ordinary onions. Carrots are orange which is the colour of the Dutch ‘Royals’. In the 17th century, ships of the VOC brought back a purple carrot from Iran. The patriotic Dutch market gardeners successfully cross pollinated again and again, to give carrots an orange colour but carrots are of course still available in other colours. Spring onions are, like bunching onions, just a young variety of onion. If you leave them in they will grow into ordinary onions.
    How to use
Lettuce is best when fresh but it keeps well for several days in the refrigerator. Obviously, lettuce is most popular in salads. Also consider mixing the green and the red varieties together as it looks very appealing. Like onions, spring onions can be eaten raw or cooked, and are very versatile for many food dishes: vegetable, soups and meat etc. They are extremely tasty cooked in a wok. Raw (both stems and leaves) spring onions are also used in salads and sauces. The spring onion is a healthy vegetable, rich in flavour. Carrots are rich in carotene and store well for ten days in a refrigerator. You can also deep freeze them. Grated carrots and salad vegetables are also excellent food. Clean your carrots under running water by scrubbing with a nail brush.
