Harvesting Details
  • Planting
  • Rocket or arugula seeds need no prior treatment and this seed tape is ready to use.
    How to Sow
Sow directly in the garden, in full sun, from April through July. Loosen the soil with a fork up to a depth of 30 cm. Span a string between two canes and plant each cane at the end of a row. Draw a furrow along the string and lay the seed tape in the furrow, cutting to the desired length. Cover the seeds lightly to a depth of no more than 0.5 cm. Press down and sprinkle with water. Remove the string and stick a label at the end of the row – more rows should be 20 cm apart. The seed will germinate in 7-10 days depending on the temperature.

  • Care
  • Give extra water in periods of drought. This will help your rocket grow well. Bolted stalks should be removed immediately. This prevents flowering and keeps the wild rocket fresh for longer.
    Harvesting
Try to prevent the rocket from bolting – this is when it produces a stalk which eventually forms flowers which then turn to seed. This happens more often in the summer and may vary by variety. Bolted rocket is still edible but tastes bitter. Try to harvest before this happens. Individual rocket leaves are picked directly from the plant.

  • Specifics
  • Rocket has been cultivated in southern Europe since the middle ages but only been of interest in northern Europe since 1981. Arugula or rocket salad belongs to the family Brassicaceae or Cruciferae.
    How to use
Freshly picked Rocket can be kept in the 'fridge for 5 days in a closed plastic bag. Rocket tastes vaguely of walnut, is rich in vitamin C and adds a special accent when mixed with other salad greens. You can also add it to a stew with other vegetables and it is great for using on the top of a Pizza or prawn cocktail. Delicious!
