Rostrinucula Dependens - Shrub

Rostrinucula dependens
Rostrinucula Dependens

Drooping purple bloomer for autumn

The Rostrinucula dependens is also called the weeping buddleia. Its hanging, caterpillar-shaped flowers resemble a butterfly bush. A thriving Rostrinucula dependens grows to 1.5 metres in size and blooms from summer to autumn.

Rostrinuculas love sun. Its nectar-rich flowers attract many friendly butterflies. You can plant the shrub in open soil or in a pot on your patio or balcony. The branches will die in the winter. These can be pruned away easily. In the spring, the shrub will grow back.

Planting and flowering details
  • Planting
  • What do I need?
    • Trowel
    • Cow manure pellets and compost
    • Water

    Water first
First, place the Rostrinucula in a bucket of lukewarm water. Add some manure pellets and compost to a large pot and then plant it. First place the plant in shade, and move it to an area in the sun for an hour longer each day, so that it can adapt.

    In the garden
Rostrinuculas love sun or half shade and nutrient-rich soil. Dig a planting hole and till the soil a bit, so that the roots can take hold quickly. Place the root ball of the plant at the correct height, so that the top is just below the level of the soil. Fill the hole with soil, manure pellets, and compost and then press down on it firmly. Water the plant right away.

    Maintenance
A Rostrinucula does not require much attention. Cover the ground around the shrub with compost and manure pellets during the winter.

    Pruning
The Rostrinucula does not require pruning. The above-ground part of the plant will die in winter. The dead branches can easily be trimmed away. If you want to give the shrub a better shape, you can prune away a third of the branches.
