  • Planting
  • You will receive the Christmas flower in a nursery pot, while flowering.
You now have a number of options:
You can put the plant in a beautiful outer pot.
You can also plant it in a larger pot. Use fresh humus rich potting compost for this and first place a few pot shards on the base.
Place the plant plus nursery pot on a saucer.
Water the plant immediately. The Christmas flower (Euphorbia pulcherrima) likes to grow in relatively dry soil. You can water the plant again if the potting compost feels dry.

  • Care
  • Euphorbia pulcherrima Princettia® needs quite a lot of water in the summer, but do allow the soil to dry out between waterings. We advise feeding regularly for an extra profuse 'flowering'. Ensure good drainage, the plant should not stand in water. When all the bracts have died back, you need no longer feed the plant. Mixing your poinsettia Various colours of poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima Princettia® look wonderful all together in a pot with fairly dry potting compost. Of course a group of all the same colour in a large planter looks wonderful too.
Keeping the Christmas flower through the winter
The Christmas flower is a tropical plant originating from Mexico, where it can grow no less than 4 metres high. In its natural habitat, the plant is bare in summer and will flower from November to late January.
The plant can also be kept through the winter as indoor plant. Move the Christmas flower to a cooler light location, an unheated bedroom for example. In winter the potting compost should be kept relatively dry, but do not allow the root ball to dry out completely. Give more water in early spring as well as a little fertiliser and move the Euphorbia pulcherrima Princettia® to the lighter and warmer living room in spring.

    Rebloom
In order to make the plant flower again, it requires a short day treatment. This consists of 14 hours of absolute darkness per day and 10 hours of light, at least 40 days in a row. For this, do not give the plant fertiliser from summer.

  • Specifics
  • Did you know that the inflorescence of the Christmas flower largely consists of bracts? The leaf shaped 'petal' is not really a flower. The real flowers are small and are in the centre of the inflorescence. These white flowers are inconspicuous and are completely surrounded by the pretty petals. As these petals remain beautiful for a very long time, Euphorbia pulcherrima Princettia® is a very popular indoor plant. The Euphorbia pulcherrima Princettia® is also called poinsettia (after the old Latin name Poinsettia pulcherrima) or Christmas flower.
