Planting and flowering details
  • Planting
  • Pampas Grass is a large ornamental grass that grows well in all soils. Make sure the root ball is moist before planting. Prepare a large hole and loosen the soil. Improve garden soil by mixing in some dry sand and granulated cow manure. Plant the root ball of Pampas Grass at the correct depth in the hole. The top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. Pampas Grass grows and flourishes in a sunny area in loose, fertile soil.

  • Care
  • Pampas Grass is an easy-to-grow ornamental grass and can remain in the same spot for several years. It grows best in fairly moist soil, fertile soil. Water more frequently during dry periods. Waterlogged soil is not well-tolerated during winter. The leaves turn brown in the winter. In spring, you can cut off all of the leaves as new leaves will soon grow again from the roots. Cortaderia selloana prefers a nutritious soil, so apply a generous amount of cow manure in the early spring.
Protect Pampas Grass in the winter
Pampas Grass is hardy, but frost can cause some damage, especially to young plants. You can bind its leaves together in the winter to protect the Pampas Grass from severe frost. You can also temporarily place a straw matting around the plant and fill in the spaces with fallen leaves.

  • Specifics
  • Pampas Grass is a dioecious plant. The female form has the most beautiful flower plumes. The narrow leaves hang elegantly down, forming a loose clump. Beware of their sharp edges as they may cut your hands. The thick plumes bloom on sturdy stems, grow up to 2 metres high! The plumes themselves grow up to 80 cm long and are great for drying and putting in a vase. The whole plant stays decorative throughout the winter. Pampas Grass is beautiful when used as a solitary plant. Keep in mind that this ornamental grass takes up lots of space.
