  • Care
  • Keep the roots of your x Colmanara’s regularly moist, preferably with lukewarm (rain) water (lime free, so preferably not out the tap). This plant drinks a lot in the summer so you might want to immerse the roots in a tub of rain water. This really would be the best way. Then allow excess water to drain off. Feed monthly with liquid plant food for flowering plants, or tomato feed – something with high potassium content. Needs a lot of spraying with water to provide a high level of humidity. When flowering is over, snip off the flower stems. Each pseudobulb will only flower once then will grow at least one new pseudobulb. If the plant grows too large for its pot, repot into a larger one. An x Colmanara can also be split to make more plants but do always leave at least 3 pseudobulb together in a new pot. Always use a sharp knife to split the plant, and always use nice airy orchid medium.
    Dormant period
X Colmonara usually forms new pseudobulbs in the autumn. If you see these appear, you know the plant is growing well. Once they are thick and fully grown (they feel full and sturdy), the plant needs to rest for about 8 weeks. Stand the plant in a cooler room (about 16° C), water sparingly (only once a fortnight) and do not feed. The soil it's in must not however dry out entirely. In this dormant period, new flower buds will grow. Once this period is over, bring your x Colmanara back into a warm living room. Now water more frequently and add some plant food.

  • Specifics
  • Orchid x Colmanara does not grow naturally in the wild! This is a hybrid between offspring of hybridised Miltonia, Odontoglossum and Oncidium. These parent plants originally grew high in forest trees and on rocks in South American jungles. The aerial roots of the plant attach to tree bark and rock crevices. The roots feed on the morning dew and rain. In terms of plant shape the offspring resembles all the parent plants. This particular type of orchid requires a particularly airy potting medium, as the roots are actually aerial roots.
x Burrageara 'Nelly Isler' belongs to the orchid family (Orchidaceae) which is a very exciting family to belong to. Orchids often try to resemble certain female insects in order to attract male insects of that particular type, for mating on their flowers. This false mating is used by the whole orchid family as a method of transferring the pollen on to the stamens, which then forms seed. This imitating of female insects can go really far as not just the shape of the flower but even the production of certain pheromones (a fast dissipating scent that can influence sexual behaviours) is used by the flowers to attract the males.
