Planting and flowering details
Show moreMonkey flower seeds require no prior treatment.
In the garden, April-May.
There are 2 ways to sow:
- Indoors on the window-sill from January is handiest - or in the cold frame. Fill pots with seeding compost and plant one seed per pot. Press lightly down - do not cover as Monkey flowers need the light to germinate. Sprinkle carefully, heat will do the rest. Hold growth back if getting too big and it is still too cold to plant out, by standing in a cooler spot. Thin out, firstly into another pot if necessary then outdoors from mid-May once you have acclimatised them (outdoors for one hour longer every day for 5 days.) After this time they will be hardened off and can be planted outdoors.
- Sow in the garden, preferably in full sun from the end of April through May. Loosen the soil with a fork to at least 30 cm deep. Draw a straight furrow 0.5 cm deep and label the row. Lay a seed on the soil every 10 cm and press gently down, keeping it above ground - do not cover as it needs the light to germinate. Sprinkle carefully with water. Extra rows at 20 cm apart. Protect your seedlings from frost with garden fleece as they can easily be damaged.
Show moreWater your Mimulus 'Magic' Mix F1 hybrid flowers regularly because the roots must never dry out. The soil can even be quite marshy for the Monkey Flower. Cut the overblown flower stemscompletely out to encourage more flowering. We advise the use of regular plant feed in the watering can throughout the summer for extra profuse flowering.
Monkey Flowers by the pond.Mimulus 'Magic' Mix F1 hybrid is an easily grown summer flower that will thrive in normal garden soil but this plant also loves it marshy - they are happy planted on the edge of the garden pond for instance.
