Lesser Reedmace - PlantTypha angustifolia
A pretty marsh plant for large garden ponds.
This reedmace is a tall marsh plant with small brown seed heads that are shaped in a cylindrical spike resembling a cigar. Dark brown female flowers can be found towards the bottom, while straw-coloured male flowers can be found towards the top of the flower. This decorative inflorescence is also known as ‘cigar’. The width of the leaves and also the inflorescence are narrower than those of the bulrush. The cigar-shaped flower heads can also be dried. Typha (reedmace) belongs to the Cattail family (Typhaceae) and is suitable for shallow water up to 30 cm.Show more
Show moreAn aquatic plant, Typha angustifolia (lesser bulrush), is best used in a pond basket. Line the basket with a piece of jute and fill the pond with special pond medium. Plant lesser bulrush in the basket and fill with soil. Cover everything with the remaining jute and sprinkle with a layer of gravel. Place the basket just below the surface or up to 10-30 cm deep in the pond. If your pond is too deep, you could stand your basket on a pile of bricks. Full sun or part shade.

It combines perfectly with the flowering rush (Butomus Umbellatus) and yellow iris (Pseudacorus) along the edge of a natural pond. These riparian plants will definitely attract several insects.
Show moreReedmace (typha angustifolia) is an easily grown pond plant that requires minimal maintenance. Cut off its dead leaves in autumn and remove them from the pond. If the clump grows too large, you should take reedmace out of the pond in May, divide the clump into smaller pieces and plant only one piece back inside the pond.
Show moreReedmace's flowers are great for drying and are therefore very popular for dried flower arrangements. Its long, narrow leaves resemble reeds.
