Planting and flowering details
  • Planting
  • We only supply A-Quality roses (as denominated by the ‘European Nursery Stock Association’) with 3 strong branches.
Soak these pot grown rose bushes in a bucket of lukewarm water for a while before planting. Prepare a large hole and loosen the soil thoroughly with a fork. Improve poor soil with the addition of well-rotted manure and fertiliser pellets. Remove the plant from its pot and plant at the right depth – the top of the root ball should come to roughly 1 cm below soil level. Fill the hole with more, improved, soil and heel well in. Water immediately and generously. Full sun or just part shade will have this plant flowering profusely.
These rose bushes thrive in large planters on the patio/decking too. Do give them a large planter with holes in the base and layer potsherds or hydro-pellets over the holes before planting the rose bush in fresh potting compost enriched with well-rotted manure and fertiliser pellets as above. Water immediately and, as above, a sunny, part shaded spot is best for abundant flowering.

Large-flowered roses combined with other plants
'Select' roses produce large, double flowers that will appear from June right through to the first frosts and will be real eye-catchers in your garden. They look wonderful in a bed surrounded with ‘Box’ hedging!
Large-flowered roses complement lots of low growing plants. Try a spotted nettle (Lamium maculatum 'Beacon Silver') as ground cover or edge a bed with lavender surrounding a group of roses. Tulips between the rose bushes in spring is also an idea.

  • Care
  • Deadhead to the first five leaflet leaf to encourage reflowering. Tea hybrids require a lot of feed to flower profusely so do fertilise your roses regularly.
Spread some granulated cow manure around the base of the hybrid roses in the winter. Feed with a mix of organic fertiliser in the spring. Fertilise in July using a special rose feed - follow the instructions on the pack for the correct dosage.
    Pruning hybrid tea roses

The 'Select' roses should be pruned every spring. Prune in March by cutting back all branches to 3-5 eyes (buds). Leave about five big branches per bush. The roses that you'll receive from us have already been pruned, so will not require pruning for another year to eighteen months.

  • Specifics
  • Roses in the 'Select' Collection are called hybrids or noble tea roses that produce large, fragrant blooms. These healthy and vigorous shrubs are distinguished by their bushy growth and beautiful blooms. The hybrid teas provide excellent cut flowers.

After flowering, these roses produce oval red-orange berries called rosehips, which also look attractive when dried and used in a decorative bouquet!
