Jade plant Crassula portulaca

The money maker

A hip succulent with thick leaves that get a nice red rim in the sun. This low-maintenance succulent is also known as 'money tree’ and it prefers a sunny spot in the house. In winter, this succulent does well in a somewhat cooler bedroom. Put it back in a warmer place in spring. The Crassula doesn't mind being put outside in summer. A nice touch to give your balcony or patio that botanical look.

  • Planting
  • What do I need?
    • Decorative pot
    • Hydro grains (optional)
    • Potting soil (optional)

The Crassula is delivered in a standard nursery pot. Put the nursery pot in a nice decorative pot and water the plant immediately.

The Crassula can also be planted in a larger flower pot so the plant has more room to grow. In that case, cover the bottom of the inner pot with a layer of hydro grains. Then add a layer of potting soil to the pot. Remove the nursery pot and plant the Crassula to 1 to 2 centimetres below the edge so there is room for the irrigation water. Fill the pot with fresh potting soil and press it down slightly. Water immediately after planting and preferably place the plant in the sunshine. The more light, the more new leaves!

  • Care
  • What do I need?
    • Watering can
    • Plant food

Water the Crassula if the potting soil feels dry. Add a little plant food to the irrigation water in spring and in summer every now and then to give the plant some extra strength. The Crassula loves being outside in the summer. Do put the plant inside before frost sets in as it isn't winter hardy. This plant loves warmth and sunshine. On the window sill or above the radiator will do just fine.
