'Himrod' White grape - Fruit shrub - Climbing plants

Vitis vinifera 'Himrod'
'Himrod' White grape - Fruit shrub

Schnell selbst angebaute Trauben

Trauben wachsen in gut durchlässigen Böden.

Harvesting Details
  • Planting
  • Make sure the root ball of Vitis vinifera ‘Himrod’ is moistened well by soaking in a bucket of lukewarm water. Prepare a large hole in humus-rich, well-drained soil. Loosen the soil and plant the grape at the right height. The top of the root ball should be slightly below ground level. Don’t plant it too deep (no deeper than the graft). When planted, fill the hole with soil and press firmly with your feet so that there is a slight depression at the base. Water immediately after planting. Grapes grow best in a sunny spot. Plant the grape vines at a distance of 150-200 cm apart. It is also possible to grow them in a greenhouse or conservatory. You can plant the grape in a large patio pot or planter, although yields will generally be lower.

  • Care
  • Grape vines need a support. It is recommended to grow them against a wall or a mesh fence to give support for the branches. When new growth begins, use a soft string and tie the strongest leading shoot upright to wires. Any other leaders can be cut flush with the stem. During the autumn, add a little lime to the soil and some mixed organic fertiliser in the spring. The soil should not be too wet but in times of drought it is advisable to water more often. If you want to cover your vines with netting to keep out the birds, attach the netting at the sides rather than throwing it over the plants.
    Pruning grapes
If you prune properly you will benefit from a good harvest from your grape ‘Himrod’. Leave a shoot of a young plant to grow and tie it in. In the following years keep the plant at the desired height and train some of the side shoots horizontally. The vines should be thinned out each winter by shortening side growth to two dormant eyes (buds). In the spring retain the best growth from each pruned stem and the new shoots will grow rapidly. In June you will notice small clusters of flowers appear. Allow 2-3 flower clusters for each side shoot of a mature plant. In June prune all branches back to 1 leaf beyond the last cluster of flowers. If the grapes are the size of a pea you can thin out to produce larger grapes. In September, cut away the leaves around the grapes so they have a better chance of ripening with the sun.
