Bergenia cordifolia
Heartleaf Bergenia

Blooms early!

Winter blooming bergenia (Bergenia crassifolia) is one of the earliest flowering plants in the garden. The glossy, leathery leaves are pretty all year round, turning red the colder it gets in the autumn. Great in (large) beds and borders. Winter flowering bergenia is a very maintenance free ground cover plant that is very undemanding about light conditions or soil type. This plant's rhizomes soon spread out. A very strong plant, it originating in Siberia.
Winter flowering bergenia was recently reclassified at Bergenia crassifolia but still gets called Bergenia cordifolia.
You will receive plants in a large nursery pot Ø 11 cm.

Planting and flowering details
  • Planting
  • Bergenia cordifolia will thrive best in the garden. Prepare a large hole and loosen the soil thoroughly with a fork. Improve poor garden soil with the addition of well-rotted manure or compost. Plant your bergenia at the correct depth in the hole - the top of the root ball should come to just below soil level. Fill the hole with soil and heel well in. Water immediately. Bergenia cordifolia will grow and flourish in full sun or in part shade, in a humus rich, fairly moist soil.
Planting bergenia cordifolia with other plants
Bergenia cordifolia is a terrific spring flowering plant that grows and flowers in part shade. Will look lovely alongside Dicentra spectabilis (Bleeding hearts), Mellitis (Bastard Balm) or Euphorbia. Mix those cheerful little pink flowers with late flowering tulips perhaps? Or a shrub like the Deutzia.

  • Care
  • Bergenia cordifolia is an easily grown perennial that will give years of pleasure! Do ensure that the soil retains moisture and does not dry out. In priniciple,  this is more or less an evergreen plant but the foliage will brown in severe winters. This hardy plant will then reflourish in the spring and will soon be covered with pretty flowers.

  • Specifics
  • Bergenia cordifolia is one of the most popular spring flowering plants. The prettily shaped foliage is glossy green and the pink flowers appear in April/May - in a mild winter, in March already. The heart-shaped foliage gives it the name 'cordifolia'. The rhizomes spread slowly. This hardy perennial will not take over where you don't want it to grow. You're going to love it.
