Planting and flowering details
Show moreMake sure the root ball of the gooseberry is well-moistened before planting by soaking it in a bucket of lukewarm water. Prepare a suitable hole in well-drained, fertile soil. Plant the gooseberry at the appropriate depth in the hole. The top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. Gooseberries grow well in a sunny area.
Show moreGooseberry is an easy-to-grow bush that bears lots of fruit. Give it extra water during dry periods although very wet soil is not well-tolerated, especially in the winter. Fertilise moderately in early spring. Depending on the weather, the fruits ripen from late June onwards.
Gooseberries need to be prunedThe first year after planting, in February prune all the branches back by 3/4. In the 2nd year, prune 6-8 branches by 1/4. Every year onwards, regularly trim new branches by 1/3 and remove all old branches. It is also possible to train its branches in a fan shape against a wall or fence.
