This is a very pretty aquatic that produces lovely pink 'umbrellas' of flower in the summer. The flowers smell of honey and attract loads of bees! Butomus umbellatus (flowering rush) has slender, ribbon-like leaves and very long flowering, pale pink umbrellas. Extremely hardy.
Butomaceae is its very own classification.
Suitable for shallow and somewhat deeper water up to 60 cm.

  • Flowering rush (Butomus umbellatus) is best planted in a pond basket. Line the basket with sacking and use special pond medium to fill it. Plant your Butomus umbellatus in the basket and fill it up with more medium. Surround with the extra flaps of sacking and add a layer of grit or pebbles. Stand the basket around 10-60 cm deep in your pond. If you don't have pond ledges and it's too deep, use bricks to bring the height up. Full sun or part shade.

    Flowering rush is a graceful aquatic that will add a really natural look to your pond. Try combinig the flowering rush (Butomus umbellatus) with for example, a yellow iris (Iris pseudacorus) or common water plantain (Alisma plantago-aquatica) along the edges of your pond.
