Planting and flowering details
  • Planting
  • Lilium longiflorum 'Bellsong' bulbs should be planted at 12-15 cm deep in the spring. Choose a sunny spot or part shade. Dig a wide hole and plant the bulbs with their roots down at 15 cm intervals. Water profusely after planting. These Lilies prefer loose, humus-rich soil. Improve poor soil with a mix of well rotted manure and fertiliser pellets. Trumpet Lily bulbs can remain planted in the same spot for many years.
The Trumpet Lily longiflorum can be planted in a pot
Thanks to their long sturdy flower stalks, Lilium longiflorum 'Bellsong' can also be grown in pots and planters. Plant the whole pot full of these gorgeous lilies - set them about 10 cm apart. An unusual alternative would be a combination of several lily bulbs with the much lower growing China Aster (Callistephus).

  • Care
  • During the trumpet lily's flowering season, add plant food to the watering can when watering. Lilies can be troubled by a tiny bright red beetle so be sure to remove these in the spring – this will stop them from eating the leaves. Cover your Lilium longiflorum 'Bellsong' bulbs in the winter with a layer of leaf litter to protect them from sharp frost. It is best to store pots and window-boxes containing lilies, frost free-over the winter.
    Lilies in the right spot
The Trumpet Lily longiflorum loves to face the warm sun, but it is important to keep their 'feet' cool. For this to be achieved, plant low growing plants around the lilies to protect the soil. Don't place your pot of lilies in complete sunshine! Choose a sheltered spot with sufficient day time sun.
