Planting and flowering details
  • Planting
  • Plant the profuse flowering Petunia 'Double Pirouette' immediately upon receipt, in your garden, a decorative planter, or a hanging basket. Prepare a hole and improve garden soil with well rotted manure or potting compost and plant at 20 cm intervals. Refill the hole and press firmly down. Water your Petunia 'Double Pirouette' immediately after planting. Placed in full sun it will be overladen with flowers the summer through, so prepare to be amazed.
    Pots and hanging baskets
The petunia is great in planters and hanging baskets. Come spring, plant closely together in fresh potting compost. You can create beautiful combinations by planting them with Lobelia, Hanging Geraniums and Verbena.

    Beds and borders
We often see petunias in hanging baskets but the Petunia 'Double Pirouette' makes an excellent bedding plant too. Create a colourful border for your garden path or fill a bed with this bewitching petunia, surrounded with 'Box' hedging. They will cascade wonderfully over the edge of a low wall too.

Tip: Petunias are great for filling spaces left by spring flowers in your beds and borders - they can be planted up to July!

  • Care
  • Water extra during dry periods, keep the bed weed-free and your petunias will thrive. Fairly undemanding, they do not however appreciate standing in water. Petunias do well even in poor soil conditions but a regular feed will encourage your petunia 'Double Pirouette' to flower more profusely - add plant food to the watering can fortnightly. Keep dead heading and your petunia will be encouraged to flower again and again. The plant will be in full bloom from June until the first frosts.

  • Specifics
  • Petunia belongs to the Solanaceae family. Most hybrids fall under P. x hybrida. but being as there are such a diverse selection among petunia hybrids, a further division was created, called 'sections. The following sections are nowadays known of:
    1. Petunia Grandiflora - large-flowered (up to 10 cm across), less weather resistant petunias
    2. Petunia Hedgiflora - very low growing, strong creeping ground covering petunias.
    3. Petunia Multiflora - medium sized flowers (up to 5.1 cm), creeping, extremely all weather resistant petunias.
    4. Petunia Milliflora - small flowered (up to 2.5 cm) petunias.
There are also wild varieties, but these are not often sold in the shops. Petunia 'Double Pirouette' belongs in the Grandiflora section.
