Cornflower 'Amethyst in Snow' - Plant

Centaurea montana 'Amethyst in Snow'
Cornflower 'Amethyst in Snow'

Exceptionally decorative perennial

There used to be just blue or white cornflower, but growers have managed to combine the two in this really pretty cultivar! The flowers are a lovely white with a deep purple centre, giving the whole a hint of purple when they're in a group - such a lovely sight and something really special to have! This cornflower (Centaurea montana) 'Amethyst Snow' will look just fabulous in a sunny border but also in large planters on your patio or decking! This plant is a very easy and hardy perennial so you will be enjoying it for years to come too!

Planting and flowering details
  • Planting
  • You can plant the Cornflower in the ground immediately after receiving it. Prepare a suitable hole in loose, nutritious soil. Improve poor garden soil by mixing in some compost and granulated cow manure. Plant the Cornflower at the appropriate depth in the hole. The top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil, press firmly and water immediately after planting. The Cornflower grows best in a sunny area.

  • Care
  • The Cornflower is an easy-to-grow perennial that requires minimal maintenance. Be sure to prevent the soil around its roots from drying out. Blooms right through June to August, particularly if deadheaded and not allowed to go to seed. Its stems above the ground will die back in winter. During winter, cover this plant with a layer of fallen leaves. Wet soil is poorly tolerated during the winter. In spring, cut off all of its leaves as soon there will be some new shoots growing above the ground.

  • Specifics
  • The impressive Cornflower (Centaurea) is a lesser known plant that has beautifully incised leaves with silvery hairs. As its flowers attract bees, this plant is perfect for a natural garden.
