    How do I plant the Chinese Windmill Palm in a pot?
    The Trachycarpus fortunei is a brilliant container plant. This palm tree grows well in a large and especially deep flowerpot or planter. But there must be holes in the bottom of the pot or planter. Cover the bottom with pot shards or a layer of clay pebbles. Add potting soil to the pot and place the root ball of Trachycarpus fortunei at the correct height. Fill it up with potting soil and press firmly. Give the Windmill Palm plenty of water immediately after planting. Place the pot in a sheltered area, yet in the sun. A patio or balcony facing west or south is ideal.

    The Trachycarpus fortunei does very well outdoors and can stay in the same spot for many years. Choose a sheltered spot in the garden for this strong palm, preferably in full sun. Create a spacious hole for planting and till the soil well. Place the root ball of the Windmill Palm at the correct height in the planting hole. The top side of the root ball should be just below ground level. Fill the planting hole up with soil, press it down firmly and water immediately. The Chinese Windmill Palm looks beautiful near a pond, in a rock garden or border, or combined with other exotic plants.

    The Chinese Windmill Palm is a strong palm that is very easy to grow. Water the Chinese Windmill Palm on a regular basis, as the root ball must not dry out. For good growth in the summer, add plant nutrients to the irrigation water each month. Give cow manure pellets in early spring. Is the palm growing too big? If so, transfer the palm tree to a larger pot, using fresh potting soil.
    Is the palm tree outdoors? Make sure that the soil does not dry out. Fertilise the palm in the spring.

    The Chinese Windmill Palm is quite winter hardy. Is the palm tree outdoors? This palm tree can withstand temperatures of up to -18°C, sometimes even -25°C. Is it getting even colder? You can temporarily wrap the palm tree with a reed mat or fleece cloth. This way, the plant can remain outside. Shake any fallen snow off the leaves.
    Is the Windmill Palm located on a balcony and in a pot? If so, you should bring the Windmill Palm inside if it frosts. Is this not possible? If not, wrap the plant with a reed mat or fleece cloth. Young plants are less winter hardy. It is best to always protect them from frost.
