Caucasian Crosswort - Plant

Phuopsis stylosa
Caucasian Crosswort

These plants grow stronger each year.

Caucasian Crosswort (Phuopsis stylosa) flowers for longer and more profusely than most other plants in the garden from April until November! A mat-forming perennial, the ground literally disappears under a carpet of funnel-shaped, lilac-pink flower. Under the flowers, graceful stems are covered with narrow dark green leaves forming whorls around the stems. The attractive flowers will attract lots of butterflies into the garden. Excellent border plant and also effective planted along the edge of a path - very aromatic.

Planting and flowering details
  • Planting
  • Phuopsis stylosa can be planted in the garden immediately after receiving them. Prepare a large planting hole and loosen the soil. Plant the Persian Cross at the correct depth in the hole. The top of the root ball should be slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil, press firmly and water immediately after planting. Improve heavy garden soil by mixing in some sharp sand mix. The Phuopsis stylosa plant grows and flowers well in full sun or partial shade in loose humus-rich, well-drained soil.
Persian Cross plant in the garden
The strong Phuopsis stylosa is an ideal garden plant. It requires minimal maintenance, flowering from April until November with charming lilac-pink flowers adding great interest to the garden. It can even be at home in the rock garden or growing over a wall. Create a beautiful spring border by combining the Persian Cross with the double-flowered peony ‘Pink Cameo’ (Paeonia lactiflora ‘Pink Cameo’) and the lovely summer flowering purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea). Phuopsis stylosa is also a lovely plant for a large pot on the patio.

  • Care
  • Phuopsis stylosa is an easy to grow perennial that will grow almost anywhere. Keep it watered during dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. Remove the faded flower stems to stimulate flowering. Protect from frost in winter with a covering of fallen leaves. In winter the plant dies back on the surface but come spring you soon see new shoots appearing which will again produce a carpet of lilac-pink flowers.
