Planting and flowering details
  • Planting
  • Soak your standard rose in a bucket of lukewarm water overnight prior to planting. The lavender will be ok with just a half hour soak. These plants should be planted as soon as possible. Remove all weeds from their planting spot and improve poor soil with some compost and organic manure granules. The plants should be approximately 30 cm apart. Prepare a spacious hole and loosen the soil with a fork - plant your standard rose in the middle. Remove the lavender plants from their pots and plant at the right depth -top of the root ball at ground level - all around the rose bush. Remember that the hole will sink in slightly after filling it up so don't have the plants too high or they may dry out. Press the soil firmly around the roots and immediately give plenty of water.
Fabulous garden plants - for the patio/decking!
The white roses of the standard rose and the blue-purplish flowers of the lavender will also look great on the patio or decking. Choose a large flower pot with good drainage. Add a layer of potsherds followed by potting compost and mix in a handful of fertiliser pellets - the pellets gradually give off nutrients that keep the plants thriving. Plant your plants together in the pot as you'd like to see them grow. Water immediately.

  • Care
  • Don't allow the plants in the border to dry out. Once they're well established they will become more drought tolerant than they were when first planted. When it's really warm and dry, they will appreciate a little extra water. Keep your border free of weeds to allow the plants more room to grow and give a monthly feed of a fertiliser for flowering plants from March to July.
The border mix in the winter
These plants are, in principle, hardy, but if you pot them up, they will of course be more sensitive to frost. It's always a good idea to put large planters in a sheltered spot over the winter. If the weather is very severe, even into an unheated but frost-free shed.
