Planting and flowering details
  • Planting
  • Plant Gaillardia aristata 'Kobold' in light, well-drained soil in a sunny position, although they will grow well in most soils and partial shade. The soil must have a good drainage as badly drained soil will cause the plant to die in winter. Prepare a suitable hole, improve heavy garden soil with some sharp sand before planting the blanket flower at the appropriate depth in the hole. The top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting.
Blanket flower is great for the border
The large, red and yellow flowers of the blanket flower will definitely stand out in the border. Combine them in beds and borders with red hot poker plants (Kniphofia) and Inca lilies (Alstroemeria). They are also very beautiful when planted in large groups within a border.

  • Care
  • The blanket flower ‘Kobold’ grows best in well-drained, relatively dry soil. It is not happy in soil that is too wet, especially in winter. However, do not let the soil around the roots dry out completely. During the flowering period regularly add plant food when watering. Also cut the wilted flower stems to stimulate new flowering. If you keep on cutting them for the home, it promotes the growth of the plant and you will continue to enjoy the flowering throughout the summer.
Blanket flower needs to be cut back
Early in September, cut back all the flower stems and a large part of the foliage. The roots can then produce new growth for the arrival of winter. Cover the plant with a layer of fallen leaves or conifer branches in the winter. Apply garden fertiliser early in the spring.
