  • Planting
  • Pot your Begonia elatior as soon as possible after receipt in a flower pot:
    • Choose a pot with holes in the base with a matching saucer for drainage. Put a layer of hydro granules in the bottom of the pot, add fresh potting compost and plant the root ball at the correct depth. Fill the pot with more potting compost and press carefully down, leaving sufficient watering space between the top of the soil and the edge of the pot.
    • Or, use a planter with no holes and stand the nursery pot on potsherds, gravel or hydro-pellets. Water will drain into this layer and will give that little extra condensation around the plant.
Water generously after planting and stand the pot in a nice warm spot in part shade - definitely out of the mid-day sun and certainly not above a radiator. Try to avoid draughts.

  • Care
  • Water your Begonia elatior regularly and do not allow the root ball to dry out. Spray with (rain) water and feed with liquid plant food for flowering plants. Avoid turning the pot as much as possible as this can cause the buds to drop off.
Potted begonias enjoy a high humidity. To achieve this it is best to use rainwater for spraying the plant. Once flowering, it will continue to flower for months and new buds will continually form. If the plant stops flowering it can prove difficult to get it back in bloom. Begonia elatior is a plant that is sensitive to the hours of daylight and will flower when the days get shorter (less than 12 hours daylight). However, if the amount of light becomes too scarce it will stop growing. This is then time for new buds to form which explains why these plants are available year round.
You can always just buy a new plant!

  • Specifics
  • Begonia elatior is a group of hybrids that came about by crossing begonia tubers with (among others) begonia socotrana, a winter flowering variety. The plants in the elatior group were very popular a few years back and are experiencing a bit of a come-back. And for good reason!
They are beautiful profusely flowering plants with flowers in all shades. Flowering in autumn and winter, they really cheer us up indoors throughout those wintry months. The variety of colours in recent years greatly expanded due to further hybridising.
Begonia elatior is classified under Begoniaceae.
The trendy and colourful Begonia elatior looks great anywhere indoors whether a classic or modern interior.
