Planting and flowering details
  • Planting
  • Platycodon grandiflorum is a striking flowerer that deserves a beautiful spot in the flower border. This plant grows well in the garden. Plant the Chinese bellflowers as soon as possible after receiving them. Prepare a spacious planting hole and loosen the soil. Plant the roots of the Platycodon grandiflorum at the right depth in the planting hole and fill with soil. Press firmly and water immediately afterwards. The Chinese bellflower grows and flowers well in a spot in full sun or part shade. This strong garden plant is tolerant of most soil types and also grows well in sandy soil.

  • Care
  • The Chinese bellflower appears a bit later than most other plants in the spring. So be careful when weeding. The plant grows beautifully if you leave it in the same spot for years and once established is very easy to maintain. Preferably plant in loose soil as the Chinese bellflower forms long, fleshy roots. Water regularly so the soil around the roots doesn't dry out. Cut the ceased blooming flower stems off completely to encourage a second flowering. The flowering of the Chinese bellflower will continue all summer long. During winter cover the plants with a layer of fallen leaves.
