Arrowhead - Plant

Sagittaria
Arrowhead

The narrow-leaved arrowhead has cute flowers!

Pretty plant that flowers in the summer with cute white flowers with a greenish centre. Beneath the surface of the water it has long narrow, ribbon-like foliage - above water also very narrow but arrow-shaped leaves on triangular stems. Narrow-leafed arrowhead needs lots of sun to flower but will also cope with part shade. This is an aquatic that can go in marshy soil too.
Sagittaria is classified under Alismataceae. This plant is suitable for shallow water up to 40 cm deep.

  • Planting
  • Arrowhead is an aquatic best planted up in pond baskets. Line the basket with jute and use special pond medium. Plant the arrowhead (Sagittaria) in the basket and fill up with more pond medium. Cover with the remaining edges of jute and add a layer of pebbles to keep everything in the basket. Plant the basket 10-40 cm under the surface of the pond. Use a pile of bricks to get the depth right. Full sun.
Best time to plant Arrowhead is May-June.
    Arrowhead (Sagittaria) with other plants
Arrowhead (Sagittaria) is a lovely plant for your pond. Looks just fabulous in large groups but mixes well with other plants too. One subtle mix you could try is with flowering rush (Butomus umbellatus) that has nice narrow leaves than contrast wonderfully with the big leaves that Sagittaria grows.

  • Care
  • If you want your arrowhead to always lower profusely, it's best to replant with new plants, using fresh pond medium in the basket. Cut back withered foliage in autumn and take it away. If severe frost is forecast, planting the basket deeper in the pond will help protect it. The roots really cannot withstand frost and should be well under the ice.
