Planting and flowering details
  • Planting
  • Prior to planting make sure that the roots of Clematis montana var. rubens are moistened well by soaking them in a bucket with lukewarm water. Prepare a large planting hole and loosen the soil. Put the roots of the clematis at the right depth in the planting hole. The top of the root ball should be just below ground level. Fill the planting hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. Clematis montana var. rubens grows well in fertile garden soil, mixed with compost. The ideal position for this climber is in full sun or partial shade.
Clematis montana var. rubens combines perfectly with other plants
Clematis montana var. rubens is a fast growing climber that will completely cover pergolas, fences and climbing frames in a short time. It’s also possible to train the stems through large shrubs such as jasmine (Philadelphus). Even a tree with lots of branches is a great support for this clematis. Try this beautiful small-flowered clematis with the honeysuckle (Lonicera) or with a rambling rose in the spring.

  • Care
  • Clematis dislikes dry soil, so water more often during dry periods. You can keep its ‘feet’ cool and moist whilst the foliage is in the sun - do this by planting a low growing shrub near the clematis. Now and again a mulch of compost mixed with granulated cow manure will be appreciated. Clematis montana var. rubens grows well along a fence or pergola. Give young plants a hand with climbing by attaching them to a support as they grow.
    Pruning Clematis montana var. rubens
This is an early and small-flowered clematis (pruning group 1). The flowers appear on the previous year's wood. Lightly prune Clematis montana var. rubens immediately after flowering. Cut back dead and damaged wood only. Heavy pruning is certainly not necessary and overblown flowers can be snipped out during summer.
