Planting and flowering details
  • Planting
  • Anemone 'de Caen' corms can be very dry. A good tip is to soak the corms overnight in tepid water to help them get established more quickly. Plant approximately 5 cm deep and 5 cm apart. The more you plant, the better the effect so plant in groups of at least 6 or divide 25-50 or more corms evenly over beds or borders. For larger groups make a wider hole and plant more corms together. Anemone 'de 'Caen' grows best in a warm spot in full sun or part shade.
    Potted Anemone ‘de Caen’
The colourful anemones 'de Caen' grow well in pots or planters for the patio/decking. Soak the corms overnight in tepid water. Use fresh potting compost and add a layer of gravel or hydro-pellets first. Plant 5 cm deep, closer together than when planted in the garden. You can create colourful pots by combining (layering!) the anemones with tulips, and beautiful biennuals like forget-me-nots.

  • Specifics
  • Our mixed Anemone 'de Caen' produces large, bright coloured flowers in white, red, pink and purple. A large coronet of black stamens in the centre of the petals, often a white ring can be seen around this centre. Anemone corms look like little claws. The anemone is sometimes referred to as the 'Windflower', from the Greek 'daughter of the wind'. This plant grows wild in Southern Europe and Asia.

    Anemones as cut flower
The Anemone 'de Caen' is also popular as a cut flower as they last a long time in a vase, even up to 10 days, and make just wonderful bouquets. Pick the flowers preferably early in the morning, choosing stems that are already starting to show signs of colour in the bud. Remove the lower leaves and put the stems immediately in a vase full of lukewarm water with a cut flower feed. Try mixing anemones and tulips together, they make a pretty show!
