Pruning by Variety

It is important to consider the variety before pruning as everything grows/is dormant at different times of the year. Some trees and shrubs need severe pruning for optimum results, others less so. Pruning at different times of year trigger different responses from trees, shrubs and plants. For many varieties, late winter or early spring, before buds form, is usually the best time to prune due to new growth forming rapidly. However, pruning should be delayed for most spring-blooming shrubs until immediately after flowering time to avoid reducing the floral display.
