Pruning Butterfly Bush

Pruning in March-April

The butterfly bush can be pruned in March-April.

Frost-damaged branches can be removed at the end of March, cutting back to the live wood.

If you want a compact bush, you can cut all the branches down to just above the ground without any problem. In a small garden it may be necessary to do this every year. For a taller bush, leave more length on the branches and only remove new branches in subsequent years.

You can also rejuvenate the bush by removing one third of the branches every year over a period of three years. These branches should be divided evenly over the bush.
