As autumn progresses towards winter, and the weather turns colder, plants that will survive the frosts start preparing for their dormant period. Preparing your garden for winter mainly involves tidying up and ensuring that plants that need covering are covered with bubble wrap, garden fleece, mulch or straw. Frost tender plants in pots should be moved inside. Dead foliage and stems of annual plants should be removed as these insect eggs and diseases can live in these over the winter months. This cold time can also be used for some jobs that get pushed down the list in the warmer months, such as digging flower beds and taking care of general repairs and maintenance around the garden. A cold frame can also be built if required.
