Aphids usually arrive in spring and their feeding habits can cause a lot of damage to plants’ leaves and stems. Both adult and immature aphids can be found feasting on new growth of a number of plants and trees. An unusual relationship has developed between aphids and ants, which are known to protect aphid colonies from predatory insects in return for the sweet honeydew secreted by the greenflies. Control of ants, therefore, can help to control aphids, as they will then be more susceptible to their natural predators. If a quick fix is required, however, the pests can be removed with a blast of the hosepipe, but take care not to damage the plants.
